MINI puddle lights are small LED door projectors. They can illuminate the ground when you open your door. Some people may have the problem that puddle lights do not work on their vehicles. One reason is that they haven’t activated the feature on the vehicle. In all, you can learn everything you need about all MINI R series (R55–R61, 2006–2016) and F series (F54–F60, 2014–2024) models. How to Turn On MINI Puddle Lights Step by Step?
Step 1 — Check If Puddle Lights Are Physically Fitted
At first, you should open the MINI door and look at the lower part of the door panel near the bottom edge. If you can see a small oval or round light unit pointing at the ground, there are actually puddle lights on your car.
However, puddle lights were optional on most MINI R-series models like R56, R55 Clubman, and R60 Countryman. And they gradually became a standard feature on F-series models from 2014. If you can only find a blank cover at that place, it is possible your MINI does not have factory puddle lights. At this time, you can only add aftermarket products rather than activation.
Step 2 — Activate Via iDrive (F-Series MINI, 2014–2024)
MINI F-series models have the MINI Connected infotainment system. You can activate the puddle lights directly through the main menu.
You can press the HOME button on the iDrive controller or touch the menu on the touchscreen:
Settings → Lighting → Exterior Lighting → Welcome Lighting / Approach Lighting → ON
If you cannot find the path, try this:
Vehicle Settings → Comfort Functions → Lighting → Door Entry Lighting → Enable
Note: the menu path may be a little different between MINI Connected generations (NBT and NBT Evo). If you can find the option but it is grey and cannot be pressed, you need to ask the car dealer for help.
Step 3 — Activation Via BMW/MINI ISTA or OBD11 (R-Series and Early F-Series)
For R-series MINI models (R56, R55, R57, R58, R59, R60, R61) and early F-series models without the puddle light option in the infotainment menu, you need BMW/MINI diagnostic software to activate the puddle lights.
OBD11 — It is a widely available third-party OBD tool that is suitable for BMW-platform cars including MINI. You can turn on the puddle lights through the following path on most R and F series models:
Body > FRM (Footwell Module) > Coding > Courtesy lights > Interior lighting > Enable

Step 4 — Replacing a Failed Puddle Light Unit
If you have completed the activation but the light still does not work, the light itself may be damaged. It is easy to replace the MINI puddle lights:
First, you should open the door and put a flathead screwdriver or plastic trim tool into the edge of the light housing. Second, you can pull the light out gently and find the wiring connector. Third, you can plug in the replacement puddle light. Remember to push it back into the housing until it clicks. It takes you less than three minutes to finish the installation per door. What’s more, you don’t need any special tools.
MINI-Specific Notes
- R56 (2006–2013): you need OBD11 or ISTA coding to activate puddle light on most models
- R60 Countryman (2010–2016): same coding path as R56; 4-door model means 4 light positions
- F56 (2014–2024): you can activate the menu by MINI Connected; check Settings > Lighting
- F60 Countryman (2017–2024): activate by iDrive menu; PHEV variant (Cooper SE) same process
- JCW models all generations: same activation process as standard Cooper variants
