It takes you about three minutes to install puddle light per door on an Audi A4. Also, you can finish it all by yourself. The door lights of Audi A4 (from the B7 to the current 2024 models) are all plug-and-play design. It means you don’t need any wiring, coding or special tools during installation. Here we will show you the Audi A4 puddle lights Installation step by step.
In this guide, you can find installation steps for the Audi A4 B7 (2004–2008), B8 (2008–2016), B9 (2015–2023), and the new B10 (2024–2025). They can be a little different between models.
Does Your Audi A4 Have Factory Puddle Lights?
Before you order puddle lights as replacements, you should confirm that your A4 has the factory door puddle lights. You need to open the driver’s door and look at the lower section of the door panel. Then you will find the factory light about 15cm from the bottom edge. If you find that the old light can turn on, your A4 is plug-and-play design.
If there is just a blank oval cover (no light unit), your A4 does not have puddle lights from the factory. Don’t worry. You can still add puddle lights. They are wireless rechargeable versions which do not require the factory socket.
Checking the OEM Part Number
The OEM reference numbers of Audi A4 puddle lights are 4G0052133G (standard rings projection) and 4G0052133J (S-Line badge). If you want to replace a failed OEM light, you should check the part number on it to ensure that you can order the correct replacement. Many plug-and-play puddle lights in the market can replace the original lights perfectly. What’s more, the price is usually cheaper than the Audi dealer’s.

Audi A4 puddle lights Installation step by step
Step 1 — Open the Door
You should fully open the door so that you can touch the door panel easily. You had better work in a good lighting environment. But if you are working in a garage or low-light conditions, you can use a torch or phone light.
Step 2 — Locate the Puddle Light
In most cases, you can find the puddle light at the lower door panel of Audi A4. It usually faces downward to the ground. On the B8 and B9 models, you can find the light in a special oval housing about 15–20cm from the bottom of the door. However, the position is a little higher on the B7 model. The light is usually round or oval-shaped with a flat surface.
Step 3 — Remove the Existing Unit
Firstly, you should put a flathead screwdriver or plastic trim tool into the small gap at the edge of the puddle light housing. Then you should take off it gently. It must be mentioned that the light is held by a friction clip and will release with a light pop. Always remember not to use too much strength. If you can’t finish, you need to work around the full circumference before taking it off.
When you feel the light is released, you can pull it out gently and you will see the wiring connector at the back.
Step 4 — Unplug the Connector
Now you can pinch the plastic release clip on the wiring connector and pull it from the back of the original puddle light. The connector is standard push-and-click style. You can see it in many Audi, VW, Seat, and Skoda models.
Step 5 — Connect the New Puddle Light
At first, you can connect the wiring connector to the back of your new puddle light. Remember to push firmly until you hear a clear click. If the connection is not successful, you should check the orientation. The clip tab should face upward on most A4 door lights.
Next, you can press the new puddle light into the door panel housing. The same as before, you need to push firmly until the clip fits well. At last, check that the light is flush with the surface of the door panel.
Step 6 — Test the Light
You need to open and close the door again to test that the puddle light works well. On all Audi A4 models, the lights are controlled by the door switches. It means the lights will turn on when you open the doors.
If the light does not turn on, you should reset the connector. If you see an iDrive or MIL warning light on the dashboard, that should be a CAN bus error. In fact, good puddle lights have an anti-error decoding chip to avoid this condition. So you just need to reset the connector to cancel the warnings.
A4-Specific Notes by Generation
- B7 (2004–2008): some early B7 models do not have the factory puddle lights, so you should check before ordering
- B8 (2008–2016): most common generation in the UK; fully plug-and-play for all vehicles with the puddle light option
- B9 (2015–2023): uses same socket as B8 — all our Audi A4 puddle lights are suitable
- B10 (2024–2025): please contact us before ordering to confirm fitment for the latest generation
